First let me start by saying that I am a "regular doctor". Check out my About Dr. Garabedian page for more details about my training. That said, osteopaths are trained a little bit differently than allopaths (MDs). First, we are taught that a person's well being and health involves their mind, body, and spirit. These things cannot be separated and they all impact your physical state. A great example of this is: Let's say you have work related stress, this is an effect on the spirit. It may in turn create anxiety in the mind, which may cause heart racing and stomach upset in the body. Osteopaths are trained to treat the mind, body and spirit as one and not just give a pill for the stomach upset, doing an EKG for the heart racing, and send you to a therapist for the anxiety. Sure, those may be the part of the plan, but they alone are not the plan.
Second, osteopaths are taught that the body has the ability to regulate and heal itself. So part of your treatment plan will be supporting the body in this process.
Third, osteopaths focus on how the physical structure of the body interacts with it's function and we are trained a form of manual medicine that can be used to treat the physical body. This treatment is similar to what a chiropractor, a physical therapist, and a massage therapist may do all rolled into one. It can be great for treating back and neck pain, muscle pain, headaches, some digestive issues, etc. Osteopathic treatment is included in your membership. If you are interested in treatment please contact me and I can help determine if this may be helpful for your specific problem.
